Some magnificent views over the surrounding countryside covering at least four counties is the reward for a walk to the top of the famous Pigeon Top hill, several miles outside Omagh.
Located just outside Omagh on the main Dromore Road, this popular destination is a dander with a difference. For starters, it’s along a narrow country road. Then, there’s a lack of tree cover often associated with popular walks. Finally, it’s almost entirely uphill! But don’t let those factors deter you because Pigeon Top has a glory unrivalled and has the added advantage for those less mobile of being able to drive to the summit and still enjoy the views.

What views there are, too. From the top you can see Donegal, the Sperrins in both Tyrone and Derry, Brougher Mountain and the hills of Fermanagh. It was cloudy when we visited, but on a clear day, parts of the Belfast Hills and Mournes might even be visible. Pigeon Top is, of course, a popular destination. For those coming from beyond the immediate vicinity, the regular lay-bys on the way to the top offer a chance to drink in the view.
From its summit, too, you can clearly see how Omagh – or the ‘Seat of the Plains’ – gets its name. Don’t worry either about traffic because the lack of development means that you’ll only see the occasional vehicle.

The only time this changes is when there’s an event on at the Corridina Mass Rock, now owned and maintained by Drumragh Parish and a location for Mass since the Penal times. This well-maintained site is about a 10 minute walk off the main road to the top, but it’s also well worth a short detour.
The solitude and hidden glen make it easy to imagine why it was chosen by our ancestors of 200 years ago to celebrate their faith. The top of Pigeon Top has a picnic area for rest and recuperation and more views of the Sperrins close by and Donegal in the distance.
It’s a site which attracts walkers – and some runners on a daily basis. Make sure and visit soon because you’ll certainly not be disappointed.
