Anti-goldmining protest in Omagh this weekend

A PUBLIC meeting has been organised for this Saturday to highlight objections over plans for a goldmine and processing plant in Greencastle.

The event is due to take place at the OASIS Plaza in Omagh and is being organised by Save Our Sperrins.

Called ‘Goldmining versus Health and Environment’, a number of speakers are due to attend and the event will take place from 2pm until 3pm.

It follows on from the Walk to Stormont last month when scores of people from Greencastle and the surrounding area made the trek of around 70 miles to Parliament Buildings for a rally and speeches.

In addition to the Walk for Stormont and the public meeting this weekend, campaigners are also in the process of organising a protest march from the Greencastle People’s Office – which is also known as the GPO – to the GPO in Dublin.

That event will take place at 12 noon on August 21.

A number of buses are being organised from the Greencastle area to attend.

It has been billed as the ‘Greencastle GPO to Dublin GPO’ and is also aimed at highlighting concerns about the proposed goldmine in the area.
