Adventurous Newtown cows rescued from slurry tank

A quartet of adventurous cows have been rescued from a slurry tank in Newtownstewart.

In a rescue mission which saw fire crews don breathing apparatus and gas monitors, the operation got underway at a farm on Lislafterty Road at 8.54am this morning (Friday).

Specialist slings and machinery were also used to save the animals, who were able to roam free by lunchtime.

In a statement, a spokesperson from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said, ”One appliance from Newtownstewart Fire Station, one appliance from Castlederg Fire Station, the animal rescue team and the Specialist Rescue Team attended the incident.

”Firefighters were called to an incident where cows were trapped in a slurry tank.

”Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used gas monitors, animal slings and were assisted by farm machinery to rescue four trapped cows.

”The incident was dealt with by 11.48am.”
