A CALL has been made for road safety improvements to be introduced in the Glebe as residents have raised concerns about speeding in the area.
In recent months the Bellspark Road has been resurfaced in a major improvement scheme as the road had deteriorated and was littered with potholes.
Concerns have now been raised about speeding in the area, and Derg SDLP councillor Steven Edwards believes extra safety measures should be put in place.
Cllr Edwards welcomed the road resurfacing on Bellspark Road but explained this cannot be a ‘missed opportunity’ in terms of improving road safety in the area.
He said, “I welcome the Department of Infrastructure’s commitment to resurfacing the entire Bellspark Road which was desperately needed given the amount of road surface defects and potholes. While this is welcome, there is also a need for additional road safety measures to be constructed in the area. The Bellspark Road has become synonymous with speeding. Speeding which has caused great concern among local residents.
“I have requested assessments and additional work to be undertaken but so far they have fallen on deaf ears.
“I have again written to the department and to the minister to outline these concerns.
“Given that current work is ongoing regarding resurfacing the road, the department should also introduce additional speeding measures on the road. This cannot be a missed opportunity for improving road safety in the area,” said Cllr Edwards.
