Cookstown man jailed for racist attack on doctor

A COOKSTOWN man convicted of a racist attack on a doctor has been sentenced to three months in jail.

Colm Campbell (34), of Ratheen Avenue, denied unlawfully assaulting Waqar Ahmed on July 10 last year, but was found guilty after a contested hearing at Dungannon Magistrates Court.

Police were called to the scene after receiving a report that the doctor had been assaulted. He claimed the defendant had grabbed him by the lapels and said, “If you call the police, I’m going to bust you.”

The court heard that, in his evidence during the contest, the defendant had alleged that the incident had arisen out of his girlfriend “not liking black people”.
