Driving lessons and tests back on the road from Friday

DRIVING  lessons and tests have been given the go-ahead to resume operations from this Friday as part of the latest easing of Covid 19 restrictions.

Instructors will be able to provide lessons for the first time in 2021 when the restrictions are lifted on April 23, alongside other services such as hairdressers and barbers.

Driving instructor Darryl Ewing, of DMS Training in Omagh said it will be great to return to work, but added that some learners may be waiting a while to do their driving test due to a backlog.

“Like everybody I will be very happy to return to work. I’ve been fortunate as I’ve been able to continue working as a motorbike instructor during this time.

“I know a lot of instructors who have had to go seek part-time work elsewhere just to make ends meet.

“Since Thursday I have had quite a lot of messages and calls from people looking to start lessons again.”

With almost a 12-month backlog of driving tests to be completed, Darryl added that anyone who hasn’t booked their test previously may have to wait for up to six months to take their driving exam.

He continued, “Apart from eight weeks last year there is basically 12 months worth of people waiting to take their test.”

“Some students could have to wait up to six months for a test. We are still waiting on guidance coming through from the DVA to see how it is going to work.

“But I very much welcome the decision to be allowed to start again and am really looking forward to it.”
