Have your say on organ donation opt-out

The public have been encouraged by Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian Tierney, to take part in a consultation on the introduction of a statutory opt-out system for organ donation in Northern Ireland.

The consultation was opened today, which also marks Organ Donation Discussion Day, by Health Minister Robin Swann MLA. It invites members of the public to express their opinions on how to introduce a soft opt-out organ donation system for Northern Ireland. There is currently an opt-in system in place, and new legislation would be required to change the system to opt-out.

Mayor Tierney said that it is really important that everyone takes the opportunity to share their views.

“It’s vital that we all have conversations with our family and loved ones about our own wishes when it comes to organ donation because in many cases people are supportive of organ donation but haven’t personally signed up to the NHS Organ Donor Register.

“I would invite everyone to take part in this consultation which will shape how we look at and deal with organ donation in the years to come.

“One donor has the potential to save up to nine lives, so the more people we have signed up who are comfortable with organ donation, the better. It’s also important to note that choice will always be there, and under the soft opt-out system families would continue to be consulted, and faith and beliefs considered.

“The opinions of the public will play a huge role in deciding the next steps that we take when it comes to organ donation, so don’t miss out on the chance to add your voice to the conversation.”

The consultation will run for 10 weeks, closing on 19 February 2021.
