Lidl vow to increase security at Strabane former site

SUPERMARKET giants Lidl have moved to allay fears over the potential for anti-social behaviour at its former Bradley Way location in Strabane after concerns raised last week by local political representatives.

Independent councillor, Paul Gallagher, spoke out following conversations with residents of Mourne Manor, adjacent to the site.

They claim that, ever since the supermarket moved from Bradley Way to its new location, the derelict site has become a beacon for ‘boy racers’, revving cars late at night in the car park.

The residents also claim they are afraid to approach those responsible in case of altercations and are afraid that the behaviour may escalate to something more than just noise from vehicles.

Responding to these concerns, Lidl has vowed to increase security on the site if necessary.

The company has also indicated that it may not own the site for much longer.

A spokesperson for the company said, “We note the concern raised and we’re closely monitoring the site with plans to increase the volume of routine security visits already being carried out, should this be required.

“We are currently in early negotiation stages with a view to selling the site and we will provide an update as soon as this process is completed.”

Cllr Gallagher has welcomed the news from Lidl, saying, “This can only be a positive thing and it must be welcomed that Lidl are preparing to increase security measures at the site.

“It will offer some much-needed peace of mind to the residents of Mourne Manor, nipping any further escalation of anti-social behaviour firmly in the bud.

“It’s also welcoming that Lidl are looking to the future and potentially selling the site for redevelopment as whoever purchases the land will continue its maintenance, although
these kind of negotiations take some time to complete. Nevertheless, this is positive news all-round.”
