POLICE in Mauritius investigating the murder of Michaela McAreavey have officially closed the case, almost 10 years after her tragic death.
The 27-year-old Ballygawley school teacher was murdered in January 2011 at Legends Hotel on the island of Mauritius while on her honeymoon with her husband John.
Two hotel workers, Avinash Treebhoowoon and Sandip Moneea, were charged with the murder but were acquitted.
A new inquiry into the killing of Michaela was opened in August but police have now officially closed the case as no new evidence was found.
The Mauritian Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) said that no new evidence to warrant a new trial or a re-trial before a jury, had been found.
Medhi Manrakahan, senior assistant to the Mauritian DPP explained, “We have been informed by the Commissioner of Police that the police has closed its inquiry into the killing as no fresh evidence has been detected by the new inquiry which could have warranted a re-opening/re-trial of the case before a jury.”
Mr Manrakahan added, “The DPP has no further comments to make in the circumstances”.
