Men charged with cross-border kidnapping and assault

A cross-border operation between the PSNI and An Garda Síochána has resulted in three Castlederg men being charged with kidnapping a man in Co Donegal and bringing back across the border and causing him grievous bodily harm.

Brendan Thomas Liam McShane (27) of Garag Hill, Shane Liam McCosker (31) of Listymor Park and Joseph Martin Mannion (35) of Ednagee Road were refused bail when they appeared before Dungannon Magistrates Court by videolink this afternoon (Friday, November 6).

They were each charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, malicious wounding and arson of a property with intent to endanger life. The court was told the alleged arson attack on a property in Donegal can be dealt with in this jurisdiction. They are alleged to have committed the offences on October 4.

Outlining the background to the case, a police officer stated that the victim was taken to a house in Castlederg and bound to a chair. According to the police officer, on the journey to Castlederg the victim’s neck was ‘nicked’ with a machete and at the property a crossbow bolt was shot into his leg and a chainsaw held behind his neck while it was ‘reeving’.

An ‘unknown person’ took the victim to hospital in Donegal.

McShane, McCosker and Mannion were arrested last month within 24 hours of the kidnapping and later realised on police bail. A crossbow, machete and chainsaw were seized by police from the house.

Refusing bail applications for the three defendants, District Judge Michael Ranaghan said he did not believe they should have been released on police bail when they were arrested last month. He denied bail on the grounds of risk of interfering with witnesses.

They will appear back before the court on December 3.
