New jobs part of £1 million plan for busy service station

UPWARDS on 40 new jobs are projected if a major refurbishment costing over £1 million at the Glendale Filling Station outside Omagh gets the green light.

Planning permission is being sought for the scheme on the Cookstown Road which will include the demolition of the existing premises which have been operated on the site by the same local family for over 40 years.

It is to be replaced by what has been described by owner Niall McCullagh as a ‘flagship Centra’ store, with an extension to the existing forecourt, the erection of a canopy and two new fuel pumps.

Thousands of people use the premises each week and it is one of several run by the McCullagh family in the Omagh town area.

Speaking to the Herald, Mr McCullagh, stressed that the future of the project depended on planning permission, but added the family is working towards ensuring all the criteria necessary for approval are being met.

“This is a scheme that we’re excited about and particularly because, if planning approval is received, then there will be 30-40 new jobs created at a time when employment is absolutely vital for the local economy,” he said.

“These will be full and part-time jobs and overall the scheme will be a flagship new Centra store in this area.”

It is expected that the new store will be around 5,800 square foot in size, with capacity for around 40 car parking spaces.

Details contained within the planning application estimate that almost 1,000 car drivers will use the store daily.

An application was submitted to Fermanagh and Omagh District Council within the past few weeks and the local government authority will now consider it before making a decision on whether or not it gets the green light to proceed.

“Our family have been running a service station at Glendale since the 1970s and it’s a very well-established business,” said Mr McCullagh.

“There are a lot of loyal customers who come here on a daily basis and what we want is to provide them with a one-stop shop for the future.

“So we are looking forward to further consolidating the business at Glendale”.
