New speed limits in Ardboe

A NUMBER of new speed limits are to be introduced in the Ardboe area, after concerns were raised by local residents.

Local councillor Niall McAleer said fears were growing over the potential for a serious traffic collision, with increased numbers of vehicles in recent years.

“I’m happy to announce that DfI (Department for Infrastructure) intend to reduce speed limits on a number of our roads, which is something that I, and other Sinn Féin representatives have called for,” said the councillor

“This is not the final solution to alleviate local residents’ concerns. More work needs to be done to improve the safety of our roads, and other speed limits could be reduced. I will continue to engage with DfI on this matter.”

The councillor also called on drivers to play their part. He added, “There are measures that can be taken by those using our roads. I call on people to slow down and be mindful of our local areas.
“These speed limits will go some way to encouraging people to use the roads safely, but ultimately it’s up to the driver to slow down.”

The three new 40mph speed limits which have been proposed are: at the football field on Kilmascally Road to the junction of the Ardboe Road; from the Ardboe Road to its junction with the Killycanavan Road; and on the Killycanavan Road from the junction with the Kilmascally Road.
