Orla and Leeann step out for cancer charity

TWO kind-hearted sisters are taking part in a very special charity walking challenge this month to honour the memories of their close relatives who have passed away from cancer.

Calling their intrepid challenge ‘Stepping It Up’, Orla Green (aged 12) and Leeann (aged 10) are taking to local pavements each day with a smile – come rain, sleet or shine – in the hopes of walking at least 300,000 steps over the month of April.

The enthusiastic girls, who are originally from Tattysallagh and are now living in Omagh, hope to raise as much money as possible for Care for Cancer, and have set their target at £500.

Speaking to the UlsterHerald, Orla said the challenge was something ‘very special’ to her.

“We wanted to raise money for Care for Cancer because we know people who have passed away from cancer,” she said. “It was my idea, but it is something exciting for us both to do as we love walking.”

Orla and Leeann, who will tackle the beautiful Riverstide Walk, traipse the Hospital Road, and traverse the leafy grounds of the Omagh Leisure Complex among many local locations, are being spurred on by brother, Matthew and proud mum, Jennifer.

“I’m so proud of the girls, especially as the challenge is not an easy one,” Jennifer said.

“We are hoping that they will get good weather so they can continue counting their steps in the warm spring sun.”

To date, Orla and Leeann have already walked more than 135,000 steps, meaning that they are well on their way to reaching their target of 300,000. Well done, girls!
