AN ‘R’ driver who was caught speeding at 95mph outside Newtownstewart has been banned for 12 months.
Anthony McKane (18), of Ligford Road, Strabane, was charged with being a restricted driver who exceeded 45mph at the Strabane Road, Newtownstewart on January 14, 2022. Defending solicitor, John Fahy, entered a guilty plea on behalf of his client at Strabane Magistrates Court.
The court heard that, at 10.30pm, police on patrol observed a Volkswagen Jetta being driven by the defendant travelling at 95mph, 50mph in excess of the limit for an ‘R’ driver.
After district judge John Connolly said he would be imposing a 12-month ban for the offence, Mr Fahy asked him to consider a shorter disqualification. “Not at that speed,” the judge replied.
Mr Connolly also fined the defendant £300.
