THERE is a true sense of hope and purpose at the Samaritans of Omagh, as the local volunteers open their hearts to help countless people in need across the UK every single day.
And today (March 5), the Campsie Crescent premises will be filled with an extra-special atmosphere, as the charity will welcome local folk and potential volunteers into the branch from across Tyrone for a cuppa and a chat about all-things Samaritans.
Whether a person is ringing the branch feeling suicidal, lonely, or in any kind of distress, the Samaritans of Omagh are there to listen for as long as needed.
The trained kind-hearted, caring volunteer on the other end of the phone, will not give advice, nor will they judge.
It must also be stated, however, that you do not need to be feeling suicidal to ring the Samaritans – they are there for everyone, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, whatever the matter – large or small.
And indeed, it is not just these volunteers that change people’s lives for the better – many Omagh volunteers find that their lives, too, are transformed and enriched as they learn invaluable life skills during the Samaritans’ step-by-step training programme.
This role also helps volunteers improve their confidence, and creates amazing friendships with fellow volunteers, which will last for life.
An Omagh Samaritan may just be an ordinary person – but they do extraordinary things. Every single day.
