South Tyrone urged to support shops as they reopen

MID Ulster Council has pledged to support local shops and businesses as they face the daunting challenges posed by the ongoing threat from coronavirus.

Chair of the Council, Councillor Cathal Mallaghan said the local authority was determined to work in partnership to help the recovery of the local economy from the lockdown.

He also urged local people to come out and support their local shops amid concerns over public confidence. “It is extremely welcome news that some of our shops can start to reopen from the end of this week. Our independent retailers are at the heart of our town centres, and we would urge our residents to get behind our local businesses in the weeks and months to come, many of which employ local people – those familiar faces that we haven’t seen for so long,” said Cllr Mallaghan.

“We can do this by not just reconnecting with their premises, but also by respecting the measures they have put in place to operate safely when we do so.

“I know that hard work is happening with many different organisations working in partnership to welcome people back with confidence. As we begin the process of the resetting, recovery and renewal of our town centres, we will undoubtedly be stronger together.”

Dungannon councillor Dominic Molloy also voiced his support for the beleagured local traders.
Last month, Cllr Molloy said it was important to look at what changes could be made to help town centres adapt to the coronavirus restrictions which are expected to be in place for some time after shops reopen. He put forward measures such as temporary pedestrian areas, increased on-street trading and a relaxation of licensing to allow shops, cafes and bars to possibly use the streets as an extension of their premises.

Speaking this week, Cllr Molloy said, “I would like to welcome the news that all retail businesses which are able to implement requirements on distancing etc to protect staff and customers can now reopen.

“There is now an even greater impetus for the council to look at what measures can be put in place to assist the regeneration of the High Street economy including looking at trading and licensing bylaws and the use of public space.”

A council spokesperson said “preparations are well underway to help ensure town centres are safe and welcoming”.

They added, “The Council, has been actively supporting businesses across the district through the crisis, providing advice, support, and coordination as appropriate. Council will continue to work with a range of key stakeholders to support businesses as they become operational once again, and to help residents to reconnect with their town centres.

“If you are a business in the Mid Ulster district that would like to receive further information, contact the Council’s Economic Development service on 03000 132 132, email economicdevelopment@midulstercouncil.org or message the Council on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.”
