SINN Féin MLA Nicola Brogan has made representations to the Roads Service and the Department For Infrastructure Minister to provide a safe pedestrian crossing on the Donaghanie Road between the ASHA Centre at the Tyrone & Fermanagh Hospital in Omagh.
This is following ongoing concerns from staff and patients alike about the ‘hazardous’ nature of speeding on the road.
The West Tyrone MLA said, “Residents of the ASHA Centre and adjoining residential home use the grounds of the Tyrone and Fermanagh Hospital to exercise but, to do so, they have to cross the Donaghanie Road. With traffic speeding in both directions it is particularly hazardous and these concerns have been relayed to us by staff.
“Many of the individuals and groups crossing at this juncture are vulnerable with reduced awareness of speed of oncoming traffic and have reduced mobility.
“The concern is that it is just a tragedy waiting to happen unless a safe pedestrian crossing is provided at the location.”
Cllr Anne Marie Fitzgerald has also lobbied the Department for Infrastructure about the road.
She added, “Traffic coming from and to the new Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex is adding to the high volume of vehicles which makes safely crossing the road near impossible.
“As well as making representations to the Roads Service Divisional Manager David McKinley asking him to assess this request as a priority I have also submitted this request in a written question directly to the DFI Minister.”
