Woman flees over the border to escape police

A STRABANE woman has been given a suspended sentence after fleeing from police and forcing another motorist to take evasive action.

Rosamund Brown (46), of Grangewood, appeared before Strabane Magistrates Court on Thursday in relation to the offences which occurred on September 23 last year.

Police were alerted to Brown and officers then spotted the defendant driving her own vehicle at around 4pm in the direction of the Lifford Road roundabout and when they activated their emergency lights and sirens, the woman moved from one lane to another without indicating.

She then entered the roundabout without giving way to traffic and forced another driver to take “evasive action”, the prosecutor told the court.

Brown then took the Lifford Road exit and overtook another vehicle on the corner of the road using the chevrons designed to separate traffic before crossing the border into Donegal.

When she crossed the border back into Strabane she failed to follow signals to stop from two uniformed officers.

She was eventually stopped around 10 minutes later by officers dealing with another incident as she was stuck in traffic on the Great Northern link road.

Deputy district judge John Connolly gave Brown a four week prison sentence suspended for a year. She was also given five penalty points and a £300 fine and a 12 month conditional discharge.
