A YOUNG person from Co Tyrone is in urgent need of a bone marrow transplant.
Bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside bones that produces blood cells. A bone marrow transplant, also known as a stem cell transplant, replaces damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy cells to restore blood cell production.
This is often done to treat blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma.
Following the news a young local person is in urgent need of a bone marrow transplant, a Cookstown company has organised a special event to encourage people to sign up to the bone marrow register to see if they may be a match.
The CDE Group will hold a donor drive next Wednesday, April 30, at their premises on the Sandholes Road, Cookstown, from 10am to 4pm.
Everyone is welcome to come along and sign up to the register.
A spokesperson for the CDE Group said: “When we recently learned about a young person in our local area urgently needing a bone marrow match, it felt personal — because it is personal. These are our neighbours, our families, our friends and at CDE, supporting our community, people, places and spaces is at the heart of what we do.
“We’re proud to offer sponsorship and volunteering support to causes such as helping vulnerable and critically ill young people and those who need it most.
“That’s why we’re hosting a donor drive, giving more people the opportunity to join the stem cell register and maybe even be the life-saving match someone desperately needs.”
