Campbell takes the reins at Owen Roes

OWEN Roes have appointed former Donegal defender Paddy Campbell as their manager for the upcoming season.

Campbell, who won a national league title with Donegal in 2007, has built up a considerable amount of managerial experience in the last decade, and the noteworthy appointment bodes well for the ‘Roes after the recent departure of Barry Tracey, who will manage Donaghmore next year.

Tracey had done exceptionally well during his three seasons at the club as they consolidated themselves as a strong Division Two outfit, even reaching the league play-offs in 2019.

Their new manager will hope to go one step further – it’s been three decades since they last played in the top flight – and they should welcome back Tyrone star Cathal McShane from injury as his recovery from a long-term ankle injury is going well.

Campbell, who lives in Derry City, managed the Derry U-17 team in 2018 and 2019 and has managed a number of club sides in the Oak Leaf county as well, namely Steelstown, Castledawson and Slaughtmanus.

He was captain of Naomh Conaill when they won their first ever Donegal Senior Club Championship back in 2005, and also won a Sigerson Cup with Queen’s University Belfast.
