Clann na nGael members to tackle two day run

TWO Clann na nGael GAA Club members are currently undertaking a gruelling running challenge.

Noel McDermott and Niall Kerlin are tackling the daunting David Goggins Challenge, which will see them complete four miles every four hours for 48 hours. They began their efforts this morning (Friday), finishing two days later on Sunday morning.

The pair are tackling the challenge for two charities close to their hearts – Motor Neurone Disease Association Northern Ireland and Western ICP Respiratory Pathway (a home respiratory care team).

“Myself and Niall are doing a run to raise much needed funds for two great charities that mean a lot to both of us,” Noel explained.

“A family friend of ours is suffering with Motor Neurone Disease for a few years now and we can see first hand how hard it is on her young family so we would like to do this challenge to raise awareness of this great charity.

“And the home respiratory care team are an organisation that can give a great lifeline to a patient and their family at home in the final months of their lives.”

The duo are hoping to raise as much money as they can over the course of this weekend, which they realise will be both a mental and physical challenge.

Fortunately, they have plenty of support, with sponsorship from local shops that will keep them fed and watered and a big support team, who will be with them throughout the two days.

Their running will mainly take place around Donemana and Aughabrack, with their night time efforts being undertaken in Strabane under the street lights for safety reasons.

While there will be times when they will question their participation in the challenge this weekend, for Niall there is no shortage of motivation as he is running in memory of his mother, who passed away last year.

“I have chosen to do this challenge for the home respiratory care team in memory of Mammy,” he confirmed.

“This organisation was a real lifeline to both Mammy and our family during her illness. The service they provided allowed Mammy to stay at home enjoying time with her family in the final months of her life.”
