GLENELLY manager Dermot Corry believes that his conflicting feelings probably echo those of the majority of club Bainisteoirs across Tyrone right now when contemplating the possible return of football action later in the summer.
Excitement, confusion and apprehension were among the gamut of
emotions which the St Joseph’s boss experienced when the GAA published its ‘Gaelic Games Safe Return Roadmap’ last Friday evening.
The document was the work of a specially appointed Covid19 Advisory Committee, which included representatives of the GAA, LGFA and Camogie Board, the GPA and a number of medical experts.
It offers a route back to activity, subject to the governments
timelines being achieved in the weeks and months ahead.
The plan paves the way for club training to resume for Adult teams
(non-contact and in small groups) from June 29th, before full group
training (contact) can recommence on July 20th, with competitions then given the green light to start from July 31st.
Inter-County training has been put on the backburner until mid-
September, with the Inter-County Championships not due to begin until mid-October at the earliest.
Dermot Corry admits that when he heard the news last weekend he was excited at the prospect of getting his team back out on the pitch
again, but would like the Authorities to flesh out their plans a bit
more.
“To be honest with you I think everybody needs it. Glenelly is a real
GAA community and all they are waiting for is to get the sport back
into their lives again, on the pitch especially.
“But like all managers you experience a range of feelings when you
hear about it. Everybody will naturally be excited about the prospect
of playing football again but then there is confusion as well about
what format it takes, in terms of competitions, and a bit of wariness
too with the whole health issues still surrounding everyone.”
