A NEW schedule for the GAA’s inter-county season complete with the major Croke Park finals in November or December will mean fresh challenges for the both the Tyrone senior footballers and hurlers.
Final arrangements for the fixtures in terms of dates have still to be confirmed. But one thing for certain is that the race for All-Ireland titles in the two codes will not be diminished by the delays or anxiety caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Mickey Harte and his players had, of course, been preparing for their big date against Donegal in the Ulster Championship on May 17.
The county’s hurlers, under the management of Mattie Lennon, were getting set to make what they hoped would be a big impression in a Nickey Rackard Cup campaign which was due to begin with group ties against Warwickshire, Mayo and Monaghan.
For Mattie Lennon, the quest for Nickey Rackard glory and a place in a Croke Park decider, is going to be crucial no matter when it is played.
“There aren’t an awful lot of games to be played in the Nickey Rackard altogether, so no reason why it can’t go ahead as planned. We would have been starting under normal circumstances in May and finishing in the first or second week of June which is only four or five weeks,” he said.
“It should be relatively straightforward to play those games during those two months, and perhaps the only one which might be in doubt would be our trip to Warwickshire.”
