It’s been a long road – Cathal McShane

IT’S been a long road to recovery for Cathal McShane, so he was overjoyed to be back doing what he does best in last Saturday’s Ulster Championship victory against Cavan.

McShane suffered a dislocated ankle when he fell awkwardly in a league encounter against Galway in February 2019. The initial prognosis suggested he’d be out of commission for around five months, but his rehabilitation didn’t go as smoothly as anticipated, significantly lengthening his recovery time.

Hopefully that’s all in the past now as he made a triumphant return on Saturday, earning a hero’s welcome from the Tyrone faithful as he was introduced into the fray in the 48th minute, and subsequently scoring two trademark points from open play.

Speaking after the game, McShane expressed his delight at getting to play his first match in 17 months.

“I’m absolutely delighted, it’s been a long road with many ups and downs and dark days. It was a tough period, I think it was 503 days but I’m not counting or anything!”
