Manager Moane worried about the fate of the 2020 Ulster Championship

TYRONE Ladies Senior manager Gerry Moane has joined several Ulster colleagues in calling for the preservation of the provincial football championships this season.

It had emerged that changes to inter-county football were in the pipeline which could see the Ulster Senior and Junior Championships being cancelled.

An Ulster meeting headed by Tyrone-based president Eileen Jones was planned for last Friday but was postponed at the eleventh hour owing to the death of Ladies GFA CEO Helen O’Rourke’s father.

The postponement though came as managers across the province spent the day in contact with each other and their delegates over speculation about the loss of the 2020 Ulster Championships.

Despite a massively reduced season, a proposal to forge ahead with an Ulster club championship was on the table, however there was no mention of the inter-county series.

It’s believed several managers had been tipped off that there would be changes, prompting them to call for championship football – most likely after the All-Ireland series.

Moane and his fellow managers were left angry at the possibility of the changes.

“It’s madness to even think of an Ulster Club,” he fumed. “In all honesty it’s a total lack of respect for players, asking players to prepare for an Ulster Club and All-Ireland Senior Championship at the one time.

“In realty a dozen of our own players could be affected, that could be the same for a Donegal, Armagh or Cavan.”
