Mixed fortunes in ACL for local sides

The opening round of matches in the O’Neill’s Sportswear Tyrone All County Leagues produced mixed results for local sides at the weekend.

Strabane Sigersons lost out at home to Beragh in Division Two 1-11 to 0-10 on Sunday.

Both sides were well up for the encounter following the long break owing to the Covid-19 crisis, but it was the Red Knights who made the trip back home in jubilant form following a fully deserved win.

Warner Mullan, Rúairí Gormley and Danny McBride were among those on target for Strabane.

Following the break It was the visitors who asserted their dominance on the game following the break and a fine move all the way out of their defence and their wing half-back Cathaoir Donnelly popped up to hit the only goal of the game.

Strabane were denied a goal at the other end when substitute Niall McGinley was thwarted by a fine stop from Aidan Franey in the Beragh goal.

Elsewhere in Division Two, Sean Coneelly came to Greencastle’s rescue with a late free as they secured a share of the spoils away to Owen Roes, 1-8 each. The visitors led by three at the short whistle thanks to a Sean Fox goal and points from Coneelly and Cathair McCullagh. Ryan McShane got the Owen Roes goal and when Conor O’Neill, Seamus Dooher and Tony Devine added points they looked as though they had done enough until that late leveller.

Aghyaran played host to Clogher and they secured a good victory. Ronan McHugh was in superb form for the St Davogs with thirteen points to his name while Paddy McNulty got their goal in a game were the Eire Ogs finished with thirteen men.

Meanwhile in Division Three Urney got their season off to a winning start as they finished on a high to claim a three-point victory over neighours Clann na nGael at Pairc Naomh Columba, 2-12 to 0-15.

Clann na nGael looked to be heading for victory with 56 minutes on the clock but Urney had other ideas as they rattled off the final scores of the game in a quick fire blitz which saw a brace of points from Jamie McAleer either side of a major from Daryl Maxwell before Jonathan Lafferty had the final say with a goal just seconds before referee Conor McGahan brought proceedings to a close.
