Secretary McCaughey reflects on challenging year

THE Tyrone GAA fixtures schedule ‘progressed in an effective and highly successful fashion’ in 2020 despite the challenging backdrop to the season, County Secretary Dominic McCaughey has stated in his annual report to Convention.

Applauding the efforts and leadership of the County Chairman Michael Kerr, his Fixtures’ Review Workgroup, as well as the CCC, the Trillick man said that it had implemented the vast majority of games in its redrafted programme.

With Covid causing the entire Tyrone club season to be squeezed into a narrow eleven week window between July-September, Mr McCaughey stated that the County fixtures planners had risen to the challenge.

He also praised the ‘co-operation of all Clubs and the assistance of the county’s referees in ensuring that the fixtures progressed in an effective and highly successful fashion’.

Mr McCaughey told club delegates at Convention that ‘2020 was a year like no other’ because of the outbreak 
of the coronavirus pandemic which swept across the globe back in March.

“In order to delay its spread throughout this country, the GAA led by example, once again, and announced, on Thursday 12th March, the suspension of all playing activities for clubs and counties.

“This included, all social activities, all games, training, and team gatherings at all ages and all grades; all Clubs’ grounds and other facilities were directed to shut down.”
