Tyrone 2-7 Monaghan 1-3
IT IS three wins from three for Tyrone minors in Tier one of the Ulster Championship with seven points between them and Monaghan at Cloughan in the end-up.
The win leaves Darren Mc Cann’s side well placed for the knock out stages although they face two tough encounters in the coming weeks against Donegal and Cavan.
Conditions were poor for Saturday’s round three clash against back to back champions Monaghan but they posed a much lesser threat from the past two seasons as Tyrone eased through the gears.
Early points from Sorcha Gormley and Nicole Donaghy underlined Tyrone’s intent and despite a Gormley goal ruled out and brought back for a free (scored by the excellent Catherine Moohan) Tyrone moved the ball around well. Monaghan’s only score of the half came in the second quarter as they struggled to puncture the Red Hand rearguard.
The Tyrone defence did look assured. Tori McMullan and Emily Conlon carried out trojan work while they tagged on a further brace of points through Gormley before the break as they led by four. Monaghan managed their second point after the interval but as conditions deteriorated it was the visitors who pulled away.
A fine team goal scored by Emma Murphy crafted from the back opened the gap to six points and piled the pressure on Monaghan. With the hosts struggling to clear their lines, Gormley, Murphy and Donaghy had goal chances saved by Farney keeper Niamh Maguire. The woodwork played a part too before at the other end Alison Gilliland scored a home goal.
Tyrone steadied the ship with a converted Gormley penalty goal, with Moohan capping a fine display with the day’s seventh point. A solid performance from Tyrone once again.
Tyrone Scorers: Sorcha Gormley 1-4, Emma Murphy 1-0, Catherine Moohan 0-2, Nicole Donaghy 0-1
