Tummery Athletic 2
Enniskillen Town United 1
TUMMERY Athletic blew the Fermanagh and Western League Division One title race wide open on Tuesday evening at McCusker Park with this victory over Mulhern Cup winners Enniskillen Town United.
A goal in each half by teenager Barry Goodwin condemned Town to a second consecutive defeat and that has pushed the door wide open for Killen Rangers, who are currently joint top with NFC Kesh on 49 points.
Right up until Tuesday night it appeared that the Mercer League was Town’s to lose but Tummery’s victory has now put Killen in control of their own destiny.
Andy Crawford and Clive Morrison’s team host the Enniskillen side in a winner-takes-all clash on Saturday in the knowledge that another three points will secure a first ever major trophy in the club’s 45-year history.
Should that game finish all square then Ryan Hanna’s team would have to beat Ardstraw in their final game to lift the title.
On Tuesday night fourth placed Tummery fielded a stronger team than they have done in recent weeks and it was the home side which made the early running.
And it was no real surprise when Kevin McAleer’s team forged ahead on 20 minutes. Shea Devlin got in behind the visiting defence on the left and he crossed for Goodwin to finish at the back post.
Early in the second half Goodwin struck again by gobbling up a loose ball after Town keeper Jamie Ray had parried the initial shot.
With just 13 minutes remaining Kane Connor swivelled in the box to halve the deficit but that was as good as it got for the visitors.
