New manse planned for historic Tyrone church

A NEW Manse is in the pipeline for one of West Tyrone’s most historic churches, if plans receive the green light.

Planning permission has been submitted for a replacement Manse to accommodate the Minister of Mountjoy Presbyterian Church, along with associated outbuildings, a new two-storey dwelling, and an attached garage.

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is now considering the application, which was lodged earlier this month.

The proposed development follows a clear-out of the existing Manse earlier this year. Although the original building had served the congregation faithfully for decades, it no longer met the needs of the modern ministry. The clear-out took place over a weekend in March, with members of the congregation helping out.

The church now hopes to construct a new four-bedroom home on the same site, with provision for four parking spaces at the property, which is located at Mountjoy Avenue, Omagh.

Architectural consultant David McKinley, in a letter to planners, said the new building would be constructed to contemporary standards and designed with sustainability in mind.

“The buildings have been oriented to gain full access to the sun,” he explained. “The front of the dwelling faces directly south, and the windows are large enough to obtain solar gain. The living areas are designed to capture sunlight throughout the day and open out onto external space along the sun’s path.”

Mr McKinley added that measures would be taken to minimise the new development’s environmental impact.

Mountjoy Presbyterian Church has been a central part of Christian life in the Omagh area since the mid-18th century, with baptismal records dating back over 200 years.

The current minister, Rev Jonathan Cowan, leads an enthusiastic and dedicated congregation.
