The Career Break Debate

Career breaks are hailed by many as something that is fulfilling, life changing and at times, necessary. Some people take them to travel, some people take them to gain an extra qualification or to try out a new career path or to spend some more time with their families.

Other’s however feel that they are a waste of time that will set back you back on the career ladder and hinder your chances of further progress.

We have to admit that both of these arguments have their pros and cons and that both of these opinions have valid points. However, we must make sure that those career breaks are being taken for the right reasons and at the right time. If you want a career break so you can slob about and watch TV then you might want to re-evaluate your work ethic, and possibly your career choice. Everyone needs a few lazy days, but have some perspective and don’t be lazy.

A career break should enrich you and make you feel as though you are doing something worthwhile. Use the time creatively to set you up for the rest of your life whether that be emotionally or career wise.

Here’s a few of the things you could do:

Travel

This is probably one of the most popular reasons for a career break or gap year. However, they can be expensive and viewed by some employers as an extended holiday. However, a lot employers will pat you on the back and tell you they’ll wish they’d done the same.

TEFL

Teaching English as a foreign language will allow you to do something that looks great on your CV and travel while still earning money. It’s a rewarding experience and if you’re thinking of a career in teaching or in child care, or you already work in those fields, you couldn’t get better experience.

Courses

Maybe you’re considering a career change, and you need to do a course to gain qualifications to do so. Well if you’ve been considering that path for a while and it feels like something you should do then take the leap and go and get the extra skills. Whether that’s as a personal trainer, a ski instructor or a diploma in global marketing, there are so many options now you can even do a course part time if that suits your lifestyle better.

Many people find their perspective change completely following a career break. The time away either makes them sure that they should change their career path, or sure that they were right the first time. You will find yourself much more able and capable to deal with any challenges and that come your way. So in our opinion, career break is a good move, if it does you good.
