Job hunting can be a horribly demoralising and demotivating process. It’s time consuming, fiddly, requires a lot of concentration and it comes with a mountain of rejection. It can be easy to toss your papers in the air and declare that you’ve had enough, I’m pretty sure everyone has done this at some point.
Although you may want to give up and throw the towel in, we highly advise that you don’t. Applying for new jobs can result in bigger and better opportunities. You will soon realise what is on offer out there and whether or not your current company is the best place for you.
Keep yourself sane with these handy tips.
Make a timetable
Having a structured and efficient routine is key to keeping your head above the water. If you already work full-time this will also help you manage your time more efficiently, as you won’t have an awful lot of it to spare.
By having a definite time to finish, and a definite time to stop, you’ll also give yourself something to work towards.
Mentally Recharge
Job hunting can be one of the most mentally and emotionally exhausting tasks we take on. The process is tedious, boring and full of rejection, so give yourself a reward and do something that clears your mind.
Go to the gym or practice yoga, go walking with a friend or bake cakes, whatever it is that relaxes you.
Keep on top of the market
Job markets and fields change all the time. Keep on top of trends in your field by subscribing to podcasts, relevant twitter accounts, and blogs.
Keep an eye on job vacancies for companies that you’d like to work for, read their job specs and work on the skills that they’re asking for. This will show that you’re well versed when it comes to interviews as well as equipping you with necessary skills.
Stay social
It can be tempting to become a recluse and feel sorry for yourself during your job hunt, especially if you’re currently unemployed. Make sure you don’t feel isolated by meeting up with friends for coffee or going for a walk. They may be able to offer some helpful tips and will encourage you to keep going.
Stay Positive
This is probably your hardest and most important point. Having a positive outlook can make the biggest difference of all. It will keep you motivated, keep you sane and stop you getting deflated by any rejection. Regardless of your skills you will get some.
