Staying Active At Work

We have become a sedentary race us human creatures. While yes we live in a fast paced world of instantaneous things, and we want everything yesterday, we spend a lot of our time sitting staring at screens.

It’s only natural after a while, that we notice everything starting to droop and get a bit squidgy around the edges. Our brains can turn a bit mushy, as we refuse to use them, preferring instead to communicate through selfies and hashtags.

So how do we keep our minds, and our bodies active, and still function in a society that encourages us to be in a semi-permanent state of “screen sleep”

1. Have a Conversation
– If we’ve said it once, then we’ve said it 100 times. Put your phone down. You more than likely spend your entire work day staring into a computer screen, so why would you choose to spend your leisure time doing the same?

Use you breaks to have real conversations with your colleagues. Obviously there are times when we need to call home or reply to our friends, but most of it can wait until later. So meet a friend for a coffee, or have a chat with your co-worker about her plans for the weekend. Interact, and not with a little hand held device.

2. Get out of the office – If you work through your lunch break, or eat at your desk, stop it immediately and spend your lunch hour in a different location. Get out of the office, and get out of the building.

Spend 20 minutes of your lunch hour going for a light jog around your local park, go for a wander in the local shops, sit and people watch at a cafe. It doesn’t really matter what it is essentially that you do, but make sure your scenery changes and your mind has time to reboot.

3. Take the Stairs – This is an oldy but a goody. Obviously for those of you working on the 45th floor this may be a slightly tall ask, but if there is a reasonable option to take the stairs in your office, then do it.

You spend a lot of your time sitting down, why be lazy when you have the chance to be active.

4. Desk Yoga – This will work wonders for your body and for your mind. Take 15 minutes every day, you have it to spare somewhere, and do a bit of desk yoga. If you aren’t sure of any routines, take a look on Pinterest or YouTube and you’re sure to find a quick routine that will relieve your mind and your body.

All these little ideas are easy, simple and won’t take up a lot of your time. There is no reason to let your brain or your body switch off for a prolonged period of time. Keep them both active and keep yourself happier.
