A FAMILY-run business in the Sperrins is planning to capitalise on the growing tourism potential of the Gortin Glens by providing six more glamping pods.
Planning permission is being sought by the Meadows camping and caravan site to provide the pods. The site is situated on the Killymore Road near Newtownstewart and not far from the Gortin Glens Forest Park which has been growing in popularity as a tourist destination in recent years.
This latest development is aimed at meeting what the applicants see is the need for more accommodation locally.
In a supporting statement for the application, which has been submitted within the past few weeks, the applicants, Robert and Helene McPhillimy from Newtownstewart said that the pods will help to meet the demand for this type of amenity locally.
“The effect of the global pandemic has had a marked impact on the local self-catering and staycation trend,” they said.
“This has seemingly rejuvenated the local domestic market and forecasts are that this trend will extend beyond the current year.
“With this in mind, the local domestic self-catering offerings in Northern Ireland are likely to experience heightened demand for the medium term at least and repeat customer pressure in the medium to long term. Simply put, the local domestic accomodation offering is sub-standard and not fit to meet demand.
“This is evidenced in an audit of providers locally, as there is a distinct lack of accommodation units available in a ten to 15 mile radius of the application site.”
The site for the new pods is just 2km from Gortin and is, of course, on the Sperrin’s scenic driving route and is situated close to an existing campsite which has also been developed in the area.
The application is currently being considered by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.
