FERMANAGH and Omagh District Council has launched a new health and wellness programme which aims to help local men improve their overall wellbeing by going for a weekly group walk.
Organised by FODC, the ‘Let’s Walk and Talk’ programme will establish a local men’s walking group which begins on Saturday, October 8, and runs for the following six weeks.
The initiative aims to bring local men together, and gives them the opportunity to introduce a weekly dose of fresh air and relaxed conversation into their lives.
The intended upshot of the programme is to encourage and convince men that improved physical and mental health can be found through regular group exercise.
Speaking about the initiative, FODC chair, Barry McElduff, said, “This Men’s Walking Group is to encourage men to meet up outdoors and enjoy a walk whilst at the same time providing an opportunity for conversations to start.
“I intend to do as many of these walks as I can,” said the council chair.
“It can be difficult for some men to open up and discuss problems they are experiencing. But the relaxed environment of an outdoor walk can help to initiate these conversations.
“This can help to reduce the number of men suffering in silence.
“As well as the physical and mental health benefits of walking, the group setting can help to combat social isolation and provide much-needed support.
“The walks will take place on various routes in the Omagh area and pre-booking is essential. For more information, and to book your place, contact Gary Donaldson at ‘gary.donaldson@fermanaghomagh.com’ or on ‘0300 303 1777’.”
