From little acorns… grow mighty oaks at St Columba’s PS, Clady

St Columba’s PS has had a very busy first term with emphasis on more than just the academic.

Positive mental health is an area that we place great importance on especially given the new norm facing all school children. All staff here in St Columba’s have been thinking outside the box to provide a safe and supportive environment conducive to learning.

A safe and supportive environment

We are very grateful to the Gemma McHale Charity for helping us to fund ‘Relax Kids’ programme which enables us to provide sessions for each class. One to one and small group Counselling is ongoing and art and play therapy sessions have been booked for the coming months as we are aware of the anxieties that children are facing in this current pandemic.

In addition, we have the expertise and experience of trained sports coaches; musical pathways in the early year classes; Music tutors; online safety awareness programme; Anti Bullying Ambassadors; CoreNI; Sensory Circuits and PATHS programs which run throughout the school, all of which promote positive mental health and well-being.

At St Columba’s we strive to develop our children to be spiritual, creative, resilient, curious and empathetic, to have strong relationships and positive attitudes to all aspects of their learning. As a Dyslexia friendly school we aim to provide well supported education where all children can thrive. We work closely with outside agencies to ensure up to date training for staff and to seek advice to assist and meet the needs of our children.

A Rights Respecting School

As a ‘Rights Respecting School’ we support and encourage the children to have their say, especially in regards to their well-being. The Student Council have established an anti-bullying ambassador group who take their role very seriously and an Eco committee who have already achieved six green flags and led the school to become an ‘ECO- AMBASSADOR SCHOOL’.

St Columba’s PS is a Catholic school situated in the village of Clady and we have a lovely relationship with the parish and community groups in the area. We are so lucky to be surrounded by woodland and nature and this allows us to plan and prepare for lots of outdoor learning.
