Mike Denver, one of Galway’s favourite sons is riding the crest of a wave, which will carry him back to Armagh next week.
The country music star has built up a vast following throughout Ireland, North and South and he is now making in-roads in the UK with some sellout concerts in England and Scotland over the past couple of years.
Mike’s meteoric rise in popularity culminated with ‘Entertainer of the Year 2016′ award and the No 1 album of the Year ‘Cut Loose’ at the ACMA Awards on RTE TV.
He has already recorded 15 hit albums and five DVDs. With his excellent backing band Mike presents a two and a half hour high energy concert show which features all his hits including ‘Tommy K’,’Wasn’t that a Party’, ‘Galway Girl’, ‘Blown Away’, plus many classic hits from the 60s and 70s.
Known as ‘The Galway Boy’, Mike is one of Ireland’s top entertainers. Born and raised in the town of Portumna in the west of Ireland he began singing from an early age continuously honing his craft and performing local shows to eventually become the entertainer he is today.
He started touring at the age of 16, signing with Willie Carty Entertainment who has stayed by his side ever since.
Like all entertainers, the pandemic proved a tough time for Mike and his band, with few opportunities to perform over the last two years. Thankfully with restrictions now lifted, Mike is delighted to get back to singing in front of his fans.
In an interview last year, he said, “I can’t wait to hit the road again, start recording again, sing and hit the road and see people.
“Because the last year and a half has been tough, and I didn’t know if it would ever get back to normal. So hopefully now we’ll see some light at the end of the tunnel and come back and make some great music soon.”
Reflecting on the highlights of his career so far he continued, “The very first gig would have been a highlight.
“It’s one of those moments that stays with me. Another would be recording with George Jones in Nashville in May 2008.
“It was a huge thing to meet George Jones, who is probably known as one of the greatest country singers of all time.”
Mike will be appearing on stage at the Armagh City Hotel from 8pm, on Thursday, March 3, with guests Brendan Shine and Michael Mawhinney.
