A FILM editor with strong links to Tyrone has been nominated for a BAFTA award for her work on Sir Kenneth Branagh’s critically-acclaimed new movie, ‘Belfast’.
Úna Ní Dhonghaíle is a regular visitor to the county as her father, Donal, is an Omagh native and family members own the popular Weigh Inn pub in the town. Úna has had a wide and varied career as an editor for both film and television, working on a range of diverse projects such as Dr Who, Stan and Ollie, Wallander, The Crown and Upstairs Downstairs.
For her work on Branagh’s ‘Belfast’, a semi-autobiographical story based on the director’s childhood experiences at the start of the Troubles, she has been nominated for her latest BAFTA.
In the final shortlist for the Editing category, Úna is up against Joe Walker for ‘Dune’, Andy Jurgensen for ‘Licorice Pizza’, Tom Cross and Elliott Graham for ‘No Time to Die’ and Joshua Pearson for ‘Summer of Soul (Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)’.
The Irish Screen Editors, a professional guild which promotes the craft of film and TV editing in Ireland, has tweeted, “Úna Ní Dhonghaile goes from strength to strength with #BelfastMovie and we are so proud of her for her #BAFTA nomination.”
Talking previously about her strong links to Tyrone, Úna said, “I love Omagh; I have spent a lot of time in the town and my cousins still live there.”
Úna has a long-standing working relationship with Branagh and was delighted to be asked to edit the film. She says her dad’s stories of growing up in Omagh helped her understand the movie’s subject matter.
She previously won a BAFTA in 2017 for her outstanding work on BBC drama, ‘The Three Girls’.
This year’s BAFTAs, taking place on Sunday, March 13, will be broadcast on the BBC in the UK and around the world.
