Appeal for traffic-calming measures on Dromore road refused

AN APPEAL for new safety measures on a busy Dromore road has been turned down.

Local councillors recently raised concerns about the speed of traffic using the Old Creamery Road in the village.

As a result, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council contacted the Department for Infrastructure to ask for road humps to be installed on the road.

However, in a letter sent to the council last week, Daniel Healy, Divisional Roads Manager, said current policy only allowed for traffic-calming measures to be installed on roads which carry less than 5,000 vehicles a day.

“The use of traffic calming deflection measures shall ordinarily be restricted to residential streets/developments/estates and not used on roads whose primary function is to facilitate through traffic,” said Mr Healy.

“Given the A32 Old Creamery Road is an A class Road carrying over 5,000 vehicles per day, vertical physical traffic calming measures would not be considered appropriate.

“In recent weeks, Department staff met with PSNI in Dromore and looked at several options to improve road safety in the area.

“Since then, the road markings at the mini roundabout have been renewed, bollards have been placed at the public toilets and signage has been upgraded to include new ‘roundabout ahead’ warning signage and ‘pedestrians crossing on the road ahead’ warning signage.

“My network development team will continue to engage with the PSNI and any other interested stakeholders to examine further interventions to improve road safety on the Old Creamery Road.”
