Castlederg records hottest day in NI history

Castlederg has broken another weather record today, the thermometer peaking at 31.3C thus bringing an end to Ballywatticock’s short-lived time at the top of the leaderboard.

The County Down townland has been plunged back into relative obscurity after the Derg knocked it off pole position, but the Summer is still young, and there is time for Ballywatticock to reassert itself as NI’s greatest suntrap.

But until then, the tropical land of Castlederg will hold the unique status within the NI weather records of having measured both the hottest and coldest temperatures to date.

During The Big Freeze of 2010, the Derg chalked a low -18.7C. That’s a difference of 49.9C from today’s high.

But there is still time Castlederg to beat its own PB, with tomorrow predicted to be another scorcher. We will take it while we can.
