A PROPOSED planning approval to extend the controversial Northway Mushrooms Plant at Killeeshil is set to be discussed next week by Mid Ulster District Council.
Residents of the Cabragh and Killeeshil areas have been campaigning against the plant for more than six years. They want to see action to address a foul smell which has been coming from the plant.
Last year, hundreds of people, including children from the local St Mary’s Primary School as well as players from Killeeshil St Mary’s GAA club and local residents, staged a protest outside the plant.
Now, the Killeeshil GAA club has called on local councillors to reject the approval recommendation.
“This company continues to inflict misery and hardship around our community and football grounds, with the constant stink that is spread around on a daily basis,” they said.
“As we have said before, we have a duty to our young people that they can enjoy training and matches in an environment free from this harmful odour which should be our basic human right.
“However, this company has ignored all our pleas for the past five years and we simply cannot allow this to go on.”
The Cabragh Concerned Residents Association has been campaigning on the issue for years.
They want to see action taken, or the plant closed.
