Department silent over Tullacorr trees

THE Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has declined to say whether it will act to avoid a “tragedy waiting to happen,” in the Tulacorr area.

Flagged up by Strabane independent councillor, Raymond Barr this week, the issue pertains to a number of overgrown trees and bushes in the area which are forcing people off the footpaths and onto the road.

“For the past year I’ve been lobbying to have this problem addressed,” Cllr Barr explained.

“The footpath on the left-hand side of the road after you enter Tulacorr is in places completely covered with overhanging hedges and bushes, meaning pedestrians and people with prams have to walk on the road.

“To compound the problem a street-light on the opposite side of the road is almost completely obscured by a tree which has literally swallowed it up.

“Given the fact the problem is sited on a sweeping bend one can only come to the conclusion that here is a tragedy waiting to happen.

“As we approach the dark evenings and adverse weather conditions the consequences of this work not being carried out don’t bear thinking about,” he said.

According to Cllr Barr the primary responsibility rests with the owners of the trees and hedges.

He continued, “But failing them taking responsibility, the ultimate responsibility lies with DFI who can commission the work and seek recompense from those responsible.

“Similar problems exist in other areas of the town and it is something I feel should be addressed with developers at the planning stage of housing projects.”

At the time of going to press, DfI has not responded to a request from this newspaper for information.
