Emergency roadworks to restore safety on Gillygooley Road

REGULAR users of the main Omagh to Drumquin road could not believe their eyes when machinery from the Department of Infrastructure rolled in yesterday (November 6), and began long-overdue emergency road works, bringing an end to the era of treacherous travel for locals.

The Gillygooley Road, which, in recent months, has been the scene of many crashes and close calls, was not due to be repaired by DfI until after the new year, owing to a legal dispute regarding tender.

However, the perseverance of local people, who put persistent pressure on the relevant authority, has paid off, and the deadly strip of road is now in the process of being restored to a safe condition.

Local councillor and Drumquin resident, Ann-Marie Donnelly, has said, “It is great to get this vital work done and I would like to thank the staff at DfI Roads for progressing the matter ahead of when it was planned.

“I would now plead with everyone to bear with us until this work is done, and the Gillygooley Road is once again fully functional.”
