Health Minister seeking legal advice to remove Covid-19 restrictions this week

THE Health Minister Robin Swann, has announced at a press conference this afternoon that he is ‘seeking legal advice’ on how to replace or remove the current Covid-19 restrictions across the North.

This comes after the resignation of the former First Minister Paul Givan, who resigned from his post last Thursday (February 3) in protest of the Northern Ireland Protocol.

This means the Executive can no longer meet and discuss any legislation including health matters.

The Executive was supposed to meet on Thursday to discuss the easing of restrictions or there complete removal.

The Health Minster said, “I am now seeking legal guidance on how I myself can replace the bulk of the remaining restrictions, if not all of them, with clear guidance and advice.

“When we had an executive, ministers always said we wouldn’t retain restrictions for a day longer than necessary, so that same logic should still apply.

“While we must move forward carefully, we can’t stay locked in emergency restrictions forever.

“We need to start getting normal back.”
