Despite the chilly autumnal air and inevitable rainfall, popular postman Ivan Gilmour has set himself the tough challenge of walking half a million steps over the month of October to help raise money for a cause very close to his heart: Care for Cancer.
A charity stalwart, Ivan has spent the last 19 years of his life volunteering at Care for Cancer, and is well-known for lending clients a welcoming smile, understanding, and sincere, open chats to aid their difficult cancer journeys.
But the outbreak of Covid-19 forced the cancellation of almost all fundraising activities for the charity over the spring and summer months, and the difference financially from this time last year to now is a staggering £41,000 – and Ivan is determined to help close the gap as much as he can.
“Many people have told us that they ‘couldn’t have coped’ without the charity,” Ivan said. “We offer families across Omagh the support and care they need, as they face some of the biggest, and most emotional challenges of their lives.
“The beauty of my steps challenge is that I can do it while social distancing; it is very safe,” Ivan continued. “People need support more now than ever, so I hope I can raise as much money for the charity as possible.”
Care for Cancer is open every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10am to 1pm. Social distancing measures have been implemented. Currently, the charity are offering clients a face-to-face counselling service at the centre, and a reflexology service. They also lend chairs to terminally ill patients.
Ahead of the challenge, Ivan has thanked everyone for their ongoing support over the years.
• Ivan’s ‘500,000 step challenge’ will run over the month of October, and will see the Omagh man walking more than 16,000 steps per day. Donations can be made to Ivan directly or left into the Care for Cancer centre in Campsie. Ivan is also hoping to set up a JustGiving page so that donations can be made online, so watch this space.
• If you would like to take part in this 500,000 step challenge over the month of October, you are welcome to do so. Sponsorship forms can be picked up at the Care for Cancer premises.
