Killeeshil singer releases Darkness Into Light songs

A Killeeshil woman and former Tyrone Rose has released a series of songs to raise awareness of the Darkness Into Light walk for mental health.

Genevieve Scullion (27), who has been living in Melbourne since 2017, has released the series of songs entitled ‘With You’ after first becoming involved with the charity event in 2016 before competing in the Rose of Tralee.

Since moving to Melbourne, Genevieve has participated in the Darkness Into Light walk there and has been asked by the organisers to compose music for anyone involved in the event.

“I have sung at the Darkness into Light events since I moved to Melbourne in 2017. I usually sing at the reflective kilometre,” the talented musician said.

“Last year I sent through a video of one of my own compositions that is on my playlist called ‘With You’. The Darkness into Light Melbourne team asked me to send another video this year and I offered a playlist of songs for people to listen to as they do the walk.”

“All the charities that are supported from Darkness Into Light, do a wonderful and important job and I am always happy to help them in any way that I can and to get involved in spreading awareness about the work that they do.”

“I was invited to Darkness into Light in 2016 when I was the Tyrone Rose. In 2017 I took part with my family in Lisnaskea, Fermanagh and since 2018 I have sang at The Darkness into Light events here in Albert Park, Melbourne.”

The songs from the playlist have the major theme of ‘Hope’, according to Genevieve.

“The songs ‘With You’ and ‘The Seed’ are songs that make me think of those who we have lost.

“I wrote the song ‘With You’ in memory of my cousin and I hope that when people listen to it, they know their loved ones are with them and that their memories will always live on through the way we live our lives and speak of their time with us.”

Genevieve, or ‘Gen’ as she is affectionately known by those close to her, hails from a musical family from Killeeshil who have contributed to the release of the music.

“I have been involved with music since a very young age. My whole family is musical and can play a few instruments each.

“It is a real team effort with my siblings inspiring the lyrics that Mum and Dad write. Then I come up with the tune and we check in with the musician of the family over in Brazil, Christopher, to see what can be improved.

“So I have been kept busy with music while I am far away from home creating new music, sharing covers on social media then I have also sung at a few weddings here too.”

The Darkness into Light Playlist can be found on Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, YouTube  and is called ‘Songs by Genevieve for Darkness into Light Walk.’

l People can sign up to take part in the virtual walk on May 8 or make a donation to the charities involved at https://www.darknessintolight.ie/home-page-2021
