New traffic calming measures outlined for West Tyrone roads

SIX different roads at various locations across West Tyrone are to be provided with new traffic calming and road safety measures.

The schemes, which have been announced by the Infrastructure Minister, Nichola Mallon, are at Gortmore Park, Shandon Park and Tamlaght Road in Omagh, Kilskeery, Gargaris and Effernan Roads in Trillick and the Drumabey Road in Spamount.

The projects are among those included in the Local Transport and Safety Measures for 2022-to-2024. But they are not certain to go ahead in that timespan, and are instead subject to the successful outcome of consultations and the availability of funding.

The need for traffic measures is based on the speed and volume of traffic, the most up-to-date three years of personal injury collision statistics and environmental factors, such as the proximity of public buildings, and the nature of the road.

West Tyrone SDLP MLA, Daniel McCrossan, welcomed the announcement, and said that the installation of humps and other measures would go some way towards slowing drivers down, especially in residential areas.

“Many people have been in touch about speeding across the district. They are genuinely concerned for their young children, who enjoy playing in their front gardens that border busy roads,” he said.

“They may also be road users themselves and have had a number of near misses with speeding drivers.

“It’s important that all measures are taken to reduce speeds on our roads – especially around residential areas.”
