Omagh egg attack was ‘sectarian’

AN egg attack on a car in Omagh at the weekend, which has been described as a ‘sectarian’ incident, has been reported to the police.

Sinn Fein MLA, Declan McAleer, said the car belonged to a family from Waterford, and that the vehicle was targeted in the Campsie area of the town on Saturday.

“The family traveled north to celebrate a confirmation with relatives who live in Omagh. They parked their car in Campsie on Saturday evening while they collected food,” explained Mr McAleer. He continued, “While they were collecting their food, the car was attacked. “Their southern registered car was pelted with egg, leaving the paintwork damaged.

“Their visit coincided with a Loyalist band parade in Campsie.”

Mr McAleer said the family was left “extremely frightened” by the attack and suggests a sectarian motive may have been involved.

“I strongly suspect that the car was singled out because it has a southern registration,” stated the MLA, “and that there was a sectarian motive behind this.

“It was a despicable attack on visitors to our area at a time when we really need to promote the district as a place to visit and enjoy. I have reported this incident to the PSNI as a suspected hate crime.”
