TRIBUTES have been paid to an Omagh woman whose death, after taking ill suddenly while on a trip to the United States, has shocked the local community.
Julie McElroy from Coolnaguard died in hospital on Wednesday. Family members had travelled from Ireland to be with her and it is understood that arrangements are currently being made to repatriate her remains to Ireland.
At the time of her passing, she was Secretary of Comhaltas Thir Eoghain and had a lifelong interest and involvement in Irish traditional music. Her work within Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann has been widely acknowledged.
Comhaltas Thir Eoghain expressed its sadness at the death of its secretary and a dear friend. It described her as a ‘stalwart’ of the organisation.
“She was a focused, hard working and a kind-hearted lady. She encouraged so many talented musicians, singers, dancers and storytellers over many years,” the organisation said.
“She served as our county secretary for more than 20 years. Julie was meticulous in her planning of the Fleadh, overseeing the management of venues, adjudicators, competitors, rules, entries, and much more. The secretary role is integral in any organisation, and Julie always ensured that all boxes were ticked at all times.
“Julie was a lover of music. She enjoyed set-dancing and travelled around Ireland, spending time with new friends she met at ‘the dancing.’ She was a keen musician, learning concertina for many years at Dun Uladh and playing in the regular sessions there.
“She dedicated and volunteered so many hours to promoting all aspects of Irish culture. Julie has left a legacy that will last forever and she will always be rememebered for her friendship, smile and laughter.”
The Dun Uladh Cultural Heritage Centre described her as being not only a colleague, but a great friend also.
“She was widely known for her big heart and bubbly personality, as well as her compassion and kindness to all. Her aura lit up a room and her laughter was contagious – whether it be in the office with the team or behind the bar on concert and session nights. Her presence at Dun Uladh will never be forgotten,” they added.
Mrs McElroy is survived by her husband, Seamus, children Alana, Ciaran, Tara and Gillian, her sons-in-law, grandchildren and the wider McElroy and Gallagher families.
