Parents encouraged to promote face covering initiative

HOLY Cross College in Strabane is urging parents to support the school on the issue of face masks, following an in-house recommendation that all staff and pupils wear face coverings in communal areas.

Speaking this week as teachers and children adapt to the new normal of education under Covid restrictions, principal at the local college, Clare Bradley admitted that the uptake on masks remains “sporadic.”

However the head teacher emphasised that the school’s “default position” is the advocation of face coverings in all communal areas whether it’s school transport, assembly or corridors.

“We have the students in zones and we strongly encourage them to wear the masks when they’re in the zones,” Mrs Bradley explained.

“We need the parents on board with this and we are appealing to them to help us, speak to the children and encourage them to co-operate with us.

“We’re doing what we can. We’re speaking to children in form groups and assembly and encouraging them through the day to please wear face coverings.

“Unfortunately, the uptake is quite sporadic. It varies from very good in year eight and very good in the sixth form. However it could be much better in the middle school, key stage four – the mid teens. We have difficulty encouraging some of the mid teens.”

The school recently introduced a range of face coverings bearing the school logo, almost as an extension of the college uniform.

Ms Bradley continued, “We’ve just introduced a range of face coverings with the school logo on them and we’re selling them in the school building. We’re also seeing a lot of the students wear colours that tie in with the uniform, although we welcome the wearing of any type.

“All staff are wearing face coverings except those who are medically exempt. And it’s important to say that’s the same for the students as well.

“But we’re very keen that there’s a better uptake from pupils and we would strongly encourage the whole school community to support our stance on face coverings.”
